AU PAIR & NANNY AGENCIES

There are just soooooo many au pair agencies in the Netherlands… if you don’t manage to find a position then you can’t be trying hard enough!  But be warned – au pairs are exploited with monotonous regularity.  Do your homework and know your rights.  Find an agency that has happy au pairs and not just happy families.  Don’t be afraid to ask questions.  The agencies will be aware that there are dozens of other agencies – don’t let an agency or a family pressure you into anything nasty!  Having gone through so many sites, I have to give the prize to Esbik as the best site – it’s not an agency, but an info site.  And it’s in Dutch, but they have everything you’ll need to know (as well as lots of jobs listed).  For information on au pair visas, see this document from Dutch Immigration.

Au Pair Match http://www.aupairmatch.com/ Looks like it’s Dutch based, although it is all in English.  Registration free for au pairs.

Eaupair http://www.eaupair.com/ worldwide site, but with LOADS of ads for Dutch families.  Go to “Quick Family Search” (bottom left), click H to get Holland as country, then your gender (you’d better be female if you want a good choice!), and enter.

ESBIK  http://www.esbik.nl/ Most of the site is in Dutch, but it is an incredibly useful site for info on au pair jobs (and more) in NL.  It includes info on the legal requirements (check details under “Algemene Informatie” on http://www.esbik.nl/aindex.html), links to loads of au pair sites, and a messageboard.  You can place an ad that you are available to work as an au pair in NL on http://www.esbik.nl/aupair/apinfor.shtml  And there is a listing of available work http://www.esbik.nl/aupair/famned.html - most of the ads are in English.  Despite the struggle you may have with the site being in Dutch, it’s well worth it – get someone to help if you have to!  (NL)

Great Au Pair http://www.greataupair.com/search_families.cfm/type/country click on “Holland” to get the full list of families looking for an au pair.  There were 52 the day I tried!

House-O-Orange http://www.house-o-orange.nl/ new organisation, based in The Hague.  Nice site.

Jobzone http://www.jobzone.nl/joffer/list.asp?chapter=8 wanted ads for au pairs. 

Joho Company http://www.joho.nl/internat/index.html “Travel, Study, Jobs”  Couldn’t quite figure out exactly what they do for foreigners in NL (as opposed to Dutchies going abroad) although they say they do things in this area.  For jobs, they ask you to send an email with your wishes to travel@joho.nl The English part of the site is very limited.

Nanny Association http://www.nanny.nl/ despite the name, Dutch language site only.  They are looking for career nannies only!  They only liaise fully qualified nannies from 35-60 yrs old, so this is not one for the Working Holiday au pair. (NL)

Need A Nanny http://www.needananny.nl/ this site really gives minimal info to both nannies and parents! (NL)

Travel Active http://www.travelactive.nl/english.php Dutch organisation with international programmes for working (including as an au pair), studying; also exchange programmes.

UITZENDBUREAUS – temping agencies (if you do a search for all of NL you’ll get over 4,000 of these!)
UITZENDBUREAUS (GEZONDHEIDSZORG) – temping agencies for the medical personnel
UITZENDBUREAUS (TECHNISCH/INDUSTRIEEL PERSONEEL) – temping agencies for technical/industrial personnel
HEADHUNTER for professional personnel

The online Dutch Yellow Pages are in Dutch only, but if you don’t understand any Dutch, try to get someone who can to help, as the search facility gives you the option to narrow your search to only admin jobs, or only catering jobs, etc.  You can also find agencies which specialise in jobs for “horeca” (the Dutch acronym for “HOtel REstaurants CAfes”), agriculture, various trades and even in sport.

nuffic http://www.nuffic.nl/index-en.html Netherlands organization for international cooperation in higher education.  They can help you with a certificate of recognition of your Aussie academic qualifications (to show its Dutch equivalent).  You’ll need your original degree/diploma, not a copy.  Can take up to about a month.  Thanks to Vanessa for this tip!

Octent as with NUFFIC, they can assess your foreign certificate. 33-35 Sarphatistraat, Amsterdam (across the road from the Amstel hotel). Fee is € 75, original certificate (OR an official copy issued by your intitution) etc.  You have to get copies of your own originals at an official copying place (that they will tell you about) for them to keep. Can take upwards of 6 weeks to process.  Thanks to Louisa for this tip!
