Most larger Dutch bookshops will have a selection of recent English language fiction.  It’s not just for we non-Dutchies; many of the Dutch prefer to read an English language book in the original version (most commendable!)  The prices can be quite astonishing though…

 

American Book Center http://www.abc.nl/ Kalverstraat 185 in Amsterdam (NH), and Lange Poten 23 in The Hague (ZH).  They have readings, open-mike nights, book clubs, etc, and their website has a number of special interest areas.

De Boekenstal – bookshop in Gouda (ZH), at Lage Gouwe 12a, tel: 0182-670638) with good selection of maps of Australia – Dutch owner Wim Kagei lived in Australia for many years, and may well see the Aussie flag flying out the front

Donner http://www.donner.nl/ in Rotterdam (ZH) is one of the biggest bookshops in Holland, including a wide selection of English books. They’re at Lijnbaan 150, Rotterdam, and are also open on Sundays. (NL)

Eureka books http://utopia.knoware.nl/users/eureka/ in Utrecht (U), specialise in books on spirituality and mysticism.

A flea market (rommelmarkt, or vlooienmarkt) or recycling shop (also called a second hand shop) is usually a good place to find English language books – sometimes quite a large range

Himalaya – travel book specialist http://www.himalaya.nl/ location: Amsterdam (NH)

Interbook biggest art bookshop in NL, with over 10,000 art books, from new to antiquariat. Lange Haven 97, Schiedam (ZH), tel: 010 – 4266034

Intertaal http://www.intertaal.nl/ bookshop specialising in language books and dictionaries (for 154 different languages)

Australian Online Bookshop  http://www.bookworm.com.au/bookworm/  Specialise in Australian books, but also in computer books, sci fi and fantasy. Australian Online Bookshop is one of the Australians Abroad sponsors that keep this webpage online! 

BOL NL http://www.nl.bol.com the UK BOL won’t ship outside the UK anymore, but the Dutch BOL site still sells a smaller selection of English language books (not as cheap as online shops outside Holland though…)

WH Smith http://www.whsmith.co.uk/ another UK bookshop, delivery prices are about the best on offer, although the books themselves don’t get much discount.

Tweedehands Boeken  http://www.tweedehandsboeken.com/ have an English language book section, with quite a large proportion of their stock being war / miltary books.

          DUTCH PRICING LAWS

The Netherlands have strict book pricing laws, so you cannot generally buy discount books here.  Buying books from an online shop in another country – even including the freight charges – is often cheaper than buying them within NL.
