ABROAD INFO PAGE FOR
AUSSIES
IN THE NETHERLANDS
Hoi Aussie maatjes!
This is a compilation of some websites and other info
that may be useful to you as an Aussie in the Netherlands.
I’ve also added the section “Nice Things in the Netherlands” to give you a start on getting to know your new country. Some are famous (e.g. Giethoorn,
Zaanse Schans), some not so
famous (e.g. underwater sculpture garden, the Delta Works). There are some interesting places to sleep
and eat out here, and some places to go to when you’re feeling homesick: a park
with parrots, emus and wallabies; tropical swimming pools, places to camp where
you may be the only camper. And things
to do with the kids other than going to high priced fun parks (although I’ve
put some of those in too).
Some things to note:
* “NL” is frequently used as an
abbreviation for “the Netherlands”
* I’ve added a web link where ever
possible; if they don’t have a website, other details are given
unless indicated by (NL)
for “in Dutch”, all websites are in English
*
letters in brackets after localities indicate
the province (to help you figure out if it’s close by or not,
or to plan a day out with various
things in the same area):
(Dr) Drenthe
(Flv) Flevoland
(Fr) Friesland
(Gld) Gelderland
(Gr)
Groningen
(L) Limburg
(NB) Noord
Brabant
(NH) Noord
Holland
(O) Overijssel
(U) Utrecht
(Zld) Zeeland
(ZH) Zuid
Holland
I’ve recently decided to put the listings in each section (mostly) in
alphabetical order, so if one of the listings is yours, don’t get offended if
you’re last – it’s just neatness!
Let me know if you have comments, corrections, additions, mail me at peter@coolabah.com
Take care and hartelijke
groetjes,
Sandy
P.S. Sorry to add this, but I’m afraid I can’t help with individual
enquiries. Firstly, the number of email
enquiries I was getting (on a daily basis) was swamping me to the exclusion of
much else! Secondly, and more
importantly, I honestly don’t have the expertise – I collect links and all
that, but I think the collective knowledge of the 100+ members of Australians
Abroad who live in the Netherlands are much more able to give you a good and
helpful answer, so post it on the message board in the Aussies in Holland
section (or even in European Issues) and you’ll be sure to get a good response.
YOU’RE NOT ALONE IN THIS COUNTRY…
To get a list of other Aussies Abroad
members living in the Netherlands, you can go to Find an Aussie and do a search for either the whole
country or your area.

FINALLY… THANKS!
Many thanks to Kate, for
her invaluable work in setting up this page. Many thanks also to YOU, all of my fellow “in
Nederland woonachtig Australiërs”
who have contributed information for this page!
And finally, thanks to the growing number of other visitors to the site
(lots of Dutch but also other expats) who have been
sending me great tips to add.
WHO
IS SANDY MORITZ?
I’m from a truly multicultural Aussie family, with a Japanese mother and
a German father, born in Melbourne and raised in Ballarat. Much to my surprise, I’m already 42. I met my sweetie, Ad van Veen
(a lekker ding, 11 years younger than me!) just after
he arrived in Australia in 1997 on a working holiday visa.
We ended up travelling right around Australia
together for ten months, and then I came back to the Netherlands with him, late in 1998.
We now live in his home village of Boskoop, a
village of 15,000 in Zuid Holland, not far from Gouda. Boskoop’s main
“industry” is ornamental tree nurseries, so it’s quite a pretty place. We live on the farm where he grew up, and
where his family has lived for two centuries, a beautiful big brick building
with attached barn, together with our cats Gonzo and Franky
(named after Frank de Boer, Dutch footy captain, as they both have reddish
blonde hair and blue eyes and because, just like our kitten, the other Frank
was missing his penalties), and our two lambs, Olga and Bessie.
I’ve had various jobs since coming
here (including a few eye opening months at the Dutch Interpol office and a lot
of fun with a Dutch design company). We are now planning our return to Australia,
and with that in mind I have resigned to concentrate on getting things here
straightened out. We hope to travel back
overland, and then buy a farm somewhere in South Gippsland.
Other than collecting websites, my
interests are wide. I love all sorts of
arts, both passively, in the form of music, theatre, literature, cinema (mostly
stuff out of the mainstream though) and actively (I do a lot of handcrafts –
mainly ceramic mosaics, felting shoes from wool, and knitting), food (both
cooking and eating), travelling (passionately – I’ve spent about a third of my
life travelling), animals and nature.
Oh, and boots. I have a
collection of about 40 pairs. Nothing
kinky, but I do have a pair of Mongolian riding boots (yes, bought in Mongolia),
some embroidered Chinese theatre boots in pink satin, and my latest
acquisition: a gorgeous pair of traditional reindeer skin boots from the Laps
in northern Finland.
I hope Aussies in Holland is of some
use to you, and I always enjoy some feedback!
Hartelijke groetjes, Sandy
